Moses Mountain & St.Catherine Monastery

Take the opportunity to visit the scene of the Old Testament – places where the God appeared to Moses.

Mount Sinai (Moses Mount) is one of the highest mountains in Egypt. It is 2285 m  high. As tradition of 3 religions (Jewish, Christian, and Islamic) tells us this mount was the place where Moses received the Decalogue. Christians believe that everybody who will take the difficult way to its top and meet there the sunshine will get the forgiveness of the sins. So a lot of people of any age and strength make this trip to their earthly circumcision.

After transportation by bus to its root you will start climbing at night to reach the top exact up to time of sunrise. This takes several hours. The first part of the way is gentle serpentine you could go by feet or if you feel not strong enough you also could ride by a camel. This desert “vehicle” hospitably will be offered you for extra fee by Bedouins. In any method of ascent you will lead by experienced guide who will do the best to bring you to the top in time. The second part of the way is 750 steps. At the top the breathtaking view on Sinai mounts will open to your gaze. Here you’ll see the small Orthodox church and the mosque. No one remains indifferent when the first rays of the sun appear over the horizon. The wise tranquility of nature gives a birth to the new day and your new personality able to be above the hustle and ordinariness…

Back way from the top always seems to be easier and quicker so in an hour you’ll come down to the St. Catherine Monastery. Here almost 2000 years monks are taking care about the Old Testament relics of the Christian world. The history of monastery started from 330 AD when Saint Helena, Emperor Constantine’s mother, founded a church at the site of the Burning Bush. Centuries passed but no one of military or religious conflicts have not destroyed this holy place.

And even now your guide will show you the Burning Bush in chapel that was in flame  but not burned  when the God appeared to Moses and ordered him to take away Jews from  Egypt to Canaan.

Also you will visit all attractive places in the Monastery – the Old Refectory, the Well of Moses, the Basilica of the Transfiguration, chapels, ossuary and cemetery. The informative story of your guide will allow you to understand the historical significance of each of these places.

After official part of the excursion  you’ll have free time to take pictures and visit the museum (for extra fee) of the monastery with its famous library. Here presented the second by size collection of ancient manuscripts after  the Vatican Library. The icon collection includes  more than 2000 work, some of them with extremely unique value as they related to the 5-7-th centuries. In other parts of the world during this period almost all representations of religious figures in icons, mosaics and wall paintings were removed or destroyed as this form of art considered to be heretical.

After hours spent in Saint Catherine Monastery you will enjoy entertainment part of the tour – you’ll visit Dahab with its authentic relaxing lifestyle, have a lunch in one of its cozy restaurants and go shopping.
